The Philippine Science Centrum (PSC), the flagship program of the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST), is recognized as one of the most effective informal learning facilities in the country. Such an important educational landmark did not escape the devastating effect of typhoon Ondoy which hit the country on September 26, 2009.
The PSC occupies 2,800 square meter facility with almost 200 interactive exhibits on display. To date, it has served over 5 million Given the destruction that wreaked havoc on PFST, SCFI and Philippine Science Centrum, the board of trustees and the management are appealing to your kind hearts to support us. Rebuilding requires your compassion and help in the weeks and months ahead.
To all our members and friends of the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology, As you may have expected, our Science Centrum which is located at the Riverbanks in Marikina was not spared the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy. In fact, all our interactive exhibits went under 3 meters of muddy
floodwaters.
All our exhibits were severely damaged, some beyond repair. But we are not about to complain and just feel sorry for ourselves. Immediately after the floodwaters receded, our staff were all back in the Centrum, cleaning up and trying to recover mud-soaked documents, computer files , and other valuable items. Our Board member Tony Herrera immediately sent us a 5 KW generator which helped our staff go to the darkened premises since Meralco power could not be restored. We cleaned up step by step manually, and to date we are now prepared to accept scheduled visits by students – this time using two of our traveling exhibit sets to temporarily replace the damaged sets. We are glad and lucky that we have four sets of traveling exhibits which were out in various provincial locations and therefore were undamaged. We will never give up. The “show must go on”.
There are some stories that will touch your hearts! We have our “Survivor 5,” five dedicated staff who had to stay inside to fix up the premises after noontime – and they got caught in the sudden inrush of floodwaters that went up to 3 meters! They found themselves trapped inside the locked, darened, flooded area and escaped miraculously after some very unusual turn of events while practically swimming almost blindly in muddy 3 meters of flood waters.
